Shaw wears cravat and high-collared jacket, with quill in hand
George Shaw (1751-1813), natural historian. This portrait celebrates his authorship of the multi-volumed 'General Zoology', begun in 1800 but left unfinished at his death. Shaw was appointed assistant keeper of the natural history section of the British Museum in 1791, before being promoted to keeper in 1807. It was at his residence at the museum that Shaw died in 1813.
