Description
Lumetron photoelectric colorimeter, model 400-G in a wooden, purpose-built box with leather carry. There is a handle at the top and a single metal clasp in front. The sides of the box have brass minted coins, with a single brass strip around the top and bottom. The box sits on rubber mounts and there is a mesh vent below. Instructions for use and a diagram of the operational panel are on a card inside the lid.

A colorimeter measures the depth of colour in a substance or fluid, especially the proportion of haemoglobin in the blood. Used in the 1940s to 1950s, this was an advance on adding chemical agents into samples and recording colour changes.
