Description
Photographic image used as a postcard. Dr Ellen Balaam (1892-1985) and Annie Bennett (1891-1940) stand in the background holding a baby each, and Gweneth Wisewould (1884-1972) sits in the foreground holding two babies. A nurse stands to the right.

These three young women were to make a remarkable contribution to medicine in Victoria. Ellen Balaam was the first the first woman from her continuation school (now known as MacRobertson Girls' High School) to graduate from Medicine, and the first woman to do general surgery in Melbourne. Annie Lister Bennett devoted her life to medicine and the community of the Goulburn Valley at Mooroopna in Victoria. Gwen Wisewould found it exceptionally difficult to establish a practice in Melbourne and established a practice in Trentham in 1938 and stayed for 34 years until her death in 1972.
