Description
Photographic image used as a postcard on verso. Gweneth Wisewould (1884-1972), Annie Bennett (1891-1940) and Ellen Balaam (1892-1985) play croquet, with Ellen Ballam on the right about to hit the ball.

These three young women were to make a remarkable contribution to medicine in Victoria. Ellen Balaam was the first the first woman from her continuation school (now known as Mac.Robertson Girls' High School) to graduate from Medicine, and the first woman to do general surgery in Melbourne.

Annie Lister Bennett devoted her life to medicine and the community of the Goulburn Valley at Mooroopna in Victoria.

Gwen Wisewould found it exceptionally difficult to establish a practice in Melbourne and so established one in Trentham in 1938, staying for 34 years until her death in 1972.

This postcard is related to four other images taken at the same time: MHM2014.17, MHM2014.19, MHM2014.20 and MHM2014.21.
