These three young women were to make a remarkable contribution to medicine in Victoria. Ellen Balaam was the first the first woman from her continuation school (now known as MacRobertson Girls' High School) to graduate from Medicine, and the first woman to do general surgery in Melbourne.
Annie Lister Bennett devoted her life to medicine and the community of the Goulburn Valley at Mooroopna in Victoria.
Gwen Wiswould found it exceptionally difficult to establish a practice in Melbourne but did so in Trentham in 1938. She stayed for 34 years until her death in 1972.
