Induction coil (inductorium or Ruhmkorff coil)
Date
Circa 1900
Description
Also known as an electromagentic induction coil or the Ruhmkorff coil, the induction coil is used to produce high-voltage pulses from a low-voltage direct current (DC) supply. These were widely used in x-ray machines, spark-gap radio transmitters and, arc lighting and experimental medical electrotherapy devices from the 1880s to the 1920s. Electro-Convulsive Therapy (ECT), was a popular treatment from a variety of mental health illness from the 1930s to the 1960s, and can subseuqent to this device.
