Description
Hand-coloured etching, black and white on wove paper. The standing dentist on the left is pulling a string tied to a front tooth of a seated man. The laughing dentist as a diversion places a red hot coal in a pair of large tongs within sight of the patient who recoils to the side pushing the tongs away with his hand screaming in agony. Framed with black painted wood and glazed, twisted wire hooks at back. The image was first published in 1773 in Tim Bobbin's 'Human Passions Delineated' with accompanying poetic text.
