Dr. Patrick Moloney was a native,of Victoria, and was born in 1843,so that he was in his sixty-first year. He was educated at St.Patrick's College, Melbourne, and the
Melbourne University.At the University he matriculated with credit, gained the English essay prize,was exhibitioner in classics, and took first-class honors in
medicine for several years, and for two years was first in arts.When the Medical
School of the Melbourne University was started, Mr. Moloney was the first student to join. He took his MB. degree in 1867, and was the first man to do his course and obtain his medical degree under the Medical School of our University. On leaving
the University,Dr.Moloney was appointed resident surgeon,and afterwards
physician,tothe Melbourne, Hospital.These appointments he held for five years, and
on relinquishing them went into private practice. In this his professional attainments
made him very successful. He held several Government appointments,and at times
acted as chief medical officer. He was also elected at the head of the poll to the position of honorary physician to the Melbourne Hospital, and was
consulting physician to several other charitable institutions. In the 'midst of a
busy professional life, Dr. Moloney found time to devote considerable attention
to literature, and he was an author of no mean repute, in addition to being
one of the best translators in Australia of Horace and other poets, both Greek and Latin... In the early days of "Melbourne Punch," when the late
Mr.B.C.Aspinall and Mr.Charles Bright wrote for that periodical,Dr. Moloney was also a constant contributor...Moloney was himself the subject of one of" the
best sonnets by Henry Kendall, the Australian poet. The doctor attended Marcus Clarke in his last illness. Dr. Moloney was married in May,1876, to Miss Ellen Quirk,
daughter of the late Mr. James Quirk,of Carlton Hall, Carlton. Mrs. Moloney
survives her husband. The only issue of the marriage is one daughter,who is married to Mr. John Boland,M.P. for Kerry, an Oxford graduate, and a practising member of theEnglish Bar.
