Maker
J MacLean
Date
22 May 1922
Description
Major J MacLean was the officer in charge of Base records, Australian Imperial Force, Victoria Barracks, Melbourne. As a mark of respect, bronze memorial plaques, with a message of condolence (memorial scroll) from King George V (1835-1936) were sent to the next of kin of all men and women in the Commonwealth who died serving their country in World War I. The plaques were colloquially referred to as the "Dead Man Penny" or the "Soldiers Penny".

These plaques were sent in stout brown cardboard, purpose made folder, inside a white HMSO envelope. The message from the King preceded the arrival of the medallion and the recipient was asked to confirm that it had been received.
