Photograph of William Henry Voils Preston (1868-1941) invigilating at an Anatomy exam at The University of Melbourne (One of four copies.) William Preston was administrative assistant to Richard Berry and Frederic Wood Jones. He had arrived in Melbourne around 1887 and became a surgeon's dresser at the Melbourne Hospital, then dresser to Thomas Ftizgerald. In 1893 he became Harry Brookes Allen's laboratory assistant in Pathology, moving to Richard Berry's new department in 1906. Greatly admired by the students and staff, he became the face of the department and filled many roles. Ross L J Jones, Humanity's Mirror, p. 191-192.
