Description
Steele's slate soldering pencil. Wooden handle with maker's details in red lettering, turned and varnished. Drilled hole in the end to take slate pencil (pointed). Similar instruments were used by H. F. Atkinson in stirring molten metal and removing debris before casting. Used in brazing (hard soldering) to scratch the surface of metal to make solder run. Wood handle often caught fire.
