Scarificator

Description
Brass 12 bladed scarifier with adjusting screw.
The scarifier instrument makes incisions in skin, over which cups are then placed having been previously evacuated of air by the spirit lamp.
Scarifiers were developed in the late 17th century and were initially well decorated. Later the decoration became less ornate and scarifiers were made of brass, like this one. They consisted of a square case with slots, very sharp, strong blades which protrude and move across on the release of a trigger. The depth to which the blades are required to cut can be regulated by a screw at the base of the lever.
