' Sir Harry Allen. From the oil painting by E. Philips Fox, Esq.'

Date
1915
Description
Reproduction of the portait of Sir Harry Allen (1854-1926) by E. Philips Fox, Esq. (1865 -1915). Inscribed in pencil on verso: Wishes for a happy New Year, 1915.

In 1914 the medical school celebrated its jubilee and in the New Year honours Allen was knighted. The profession presented him with his portrait by E. Phillips Fox; this was destroyed in the Wilson Hall fire in 1952.

Harry Brookes Allen (1854–1926) became the first Australian-born professor at the University of Melbourne in 1882, when a reform of the Medical School split the foundation chair of anatomy, pathology and physiology into two, with Allen being appointed professor of anatomy and pathology, and his teacher, the foundation professor George Britton Halford (1824-1910) retaining his first love, physiology. As well as serving as dean for extensive periods, Allen took on numerous positions as a medical administrator and government advisor, perhaps most importantly playing a major part in the introduction of Melbourne’s extensive sewerage system in the late nineteenth century.
