Printed and signed card for 'Lectures on Botany' conducted by Sir W. Jackson Hooker L.L.D., for Mr Arthur O. Mullane, W.J.H. There is a red wax seal in the upper right recto corner, and the printed date of "MAY" has been crossed our and replaced with the handwritten date "Feb. 5"
Dr Arthur O'Mullane (1812-1863) arrived as Surgeon Superintendent on the 'William Metcalfe' on 15 November 1839. He was elected as one of the first honorary physicians to the Melbourne Hospital and founding member of The Port Phillip Medical association in 1846.
Arthur O’Mullane (1812 – 1863) studied medicine at Dublin University and the University of Glasgow and graduated as a Doctor of Medicine in 1837 prior to his arrival in Melbourne in 1839 on the ship William Metcalf . In Melbourne he was an attending doctor to the St. James Dorcas Society and St. James Visiting Society, two charities that provided medical services in Melbourne. Initially, the charities operated out a small house on Little Collins Street that functioned as a hospital. David Thomas, David Wilkie, Arthur O’Mullane and Myers opened a hospital in Bourke Street West. He became one of three first Honorary Physicians at Melbourne hospital in 1847, alongside Godfrey Howitt and E C Hobson and remained there until 1853.After 1853 Arthur O’Mullane ran a private practice and is noted for his role as a physician to Melbourne’s Jewish community .
