Certificate to Arthur O'Mullane from the Hospital in Childbirth and diseases among women and infants, Leband Institute, Angelsey.
Arthur O’Mullane (1812 – 1863) studied medicine at Dublin University and the University of Glasgow and graduated as a Doctor of Medicine in 1837 prior to his arrival in Melbourne in 1839 on the ship William Metcalf . In Melbourne he was an attending doctor to the St. James Dorcas Society and St. James Visiting Society, two charities that provided medical services in Melbourne. Initially, the charities operated out a small house on Little Collins Street that functioned as a hospital. David Thomas, David Wilkie, Arthur O’Mullane and Myers opened a hospital in Bourke Street West. He became one of three first Honorary Physicians at Melbourne hospital in 1847, alongside Godfrey Howitt and E C Hobson and remained there until 1853.After 1853 Arthur O’Mullane ran a private practice and is noted for his role as a physician to Melbourne’s Jewish community .
