Description
Magnetrons were a source of power in the 4 million volt (MV) linear accelerator. The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre ordered their first linear accelerator in 1956 at the cost of £65,000, approximately ten times the price of a deep therapy X-ray machine. The introduction of linear accelerators was a significant development in radiation therapy because they more accurately treated tumours lying deep within the body. The first linear accelerator produced a much more powerful and deep penetrating beam of 4 million volts (4 MV) compared to X-ray machines which had a maximum of 250 to 300 thousand volts. This magnetron was a source of R.F. power in the 4 MV Linear accelerator. It was tested 1969.
