Shield
Maker
Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
Date
1968
Description
The patient's registration number was 68 (the year they were first registered). This shield was constructed in the Peter Mac mould room. It would have been used in combination with two beams (lateral and arterial beam) to compensate for the shape of the patient and give a uniform dose of radiation. Lead strips are beneath the paper at specific measurements of a few millimetres thick. These shields were not routinely used because they took a long time to produce. They gradually were no longer used due to linear accelerators.
