Description
Dark brown timber examination couch with horse-hair padded leather upholstery fixed with metal upholstery tacks. There are two drawers under the couch top and the hinged head/back rest is adjustable. Originally used by Dr J.W. Dunbar Hooper (1860-1934) in his Collins Street rooms. The chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Melbourne was named after him. Dr Hooper was an Honorary Physician to the Women's Hospital 1888-98. It remained in his rooms after the practice was taken over by (Sir) William Johnston and eventually was moved to the private practice of Sir William's son, Dr Stewart Johnston in Mornington.
