Baby's abdominal binder

Date
1920
Description
Cream coloured fine wool flannel baby's abdominal binder with pink, orange and green border. Binders were used to protect a newborn's umbelical cord, a practice observed until the early 1960s. A sewn in label bears the name: "L JOHNSTONE". Pinking shear edge.

Actual date range estimated.

The note accompanying the binder when donated to the hospital in 1983 explains that this piece of flanel is an authentic "baby binder" that was commonly used on babies about 30-40 years ago. Binders were used to ensure that babies had "nice navels".
