Mrs Alexander Dick donation plaque

Date
1908
Description
Very small brass plaque with bevelled edges and dedication in black paint: Text reads: "BEQUEATHED TO / THE WOMEN'S HOSPITAL / BY THE LATE / MRS ALEXANDER DICK / AUGUST 14TH 1908"

The plaque was fixed to a Rontgen upright piano in the Brookes Gillespie Nurses Home, where is had been for as long as anyone could remember (in 2005). It was in very poor condition, the case and keyboard particularly.

The Board of Management Minutes of 14 August 1908 record that Mr Alexander Dick donated 50 pounds to the hospital. The Board determined that this should be spent on "special furnishings". Mrs Alexander Dick had been a member of the Board from 1903 until her death in 1908. Mr Dick was a member from 1908 until his death in 1914 and a ward was named after him in the new Druids Wing.

A new Outpatients and Nurses Home, facing Grattan Street, was completed in 1909, which is presumed to be where the piano was originally located.
