Nurses Certificate issued to Beatrice May Thurlby by the Midwifery Department of the Women's Hospital. The certificate reads: "Women’s Hospital Midwifery Department / Melbourne Nov 14th 1900 / This is to certify that B M Thurlby has received / Instruction in the Special work of the / Midwifery Department / of this Hospital for a period of six months and, after due / examination, was found to be competent to discharge the duties of an Obstetrical Nurse."

It is signed by the Hospital President, Honorary Secretary, Resident Medical Officer and Examiners and Beatrice Thurlby.

The certificate and image of hospital are on cream paper and are mounted and presented in a brown leather folder with gold embossed borders. The text is printed in black ink and signatures are in black ink and there is a photograph of the Genevieve Ward Wing (opened 1888) on the facing page.. The title is embossed on gold on the front of the folder: "NURSE’S /CERTIFICATE / WOMEN’S HOSPITAL / MIDWIFERY DEPARTMENT". 23.5 x 16.3cm (closed), 32.5 x 23.5cm (open)
