Sulphonamide container

Description
A small screw top aluminium cannister which contained May & Baker sulphonamide, from the first batch used at the Royal Women's Hospital. The lid of the canister is impressed with the letters "M B". The canister was retained by Mr A J Cunningham, Manager Secretary of the Women's. Sulphonamide was first used in 1936, but it is not currently known when it was introduced to The Women's. Sulphonamide was the first and only effective antibiotic available in the years before penicillin.
