The certificate reads: "Women’s Hospital / Midwifery Department / Melbourne [blank] / This is to certify that Ella L Coates has received Instruction in the / Special Work of the Midwifery Department of this Hospital for a period of / [blank] and, after due examination, was found to be competent to / discharge the duties of an Obstetric Nurse." It is signed by the Hospital President, Delia Russell, Honorary Secretary, Lillias M Skene, Secretary, GJ Butler, Examiners [two, illegible] and Matron M E McDonald. It is undated and unsigned by the nurse.
The certificate has black and gold printed text, a gold and black decorative border; it is printed on cream paper. Names and signatures are in black and blue ink.
