Uniform - Staff nurses

Date
Circa 1963
Description
Starched mid blue waisted cotton dress with round neck, belt loops, short sleeves, eight panel skirt, patch pockets either side of the dress front, front opening, button-down from the neck to the hemline using buttons with shanks and clips (missing). The dress is very worn, especially around the edges, there is a repair to the first button hole and on the skirt below the waist adjacent to the buttonhole. The hem is very frayed and there is overall staining. The dress was worn by E. M MacEwan, her name is written in black ink on the dress back inside collar bias, and is an example of a staff or "staffy's uniform. Eleanor MacEwan was a trainee at the RWH 1954-55, Staff and Charge Nurse in the Labour ward until she went to London in 1963. According to notes from Margaret Mabbitt, at certain periods staff organised their own uniforms, this one is from the 1950s.
