Foundation stone document: The Womens Hospital

Description
One of two parchment manuscript documents with the text written in black ink describing the origins of the Women’s Hospital, in particular referring respectively to the new buildings for which foundation stones were laid in 1908 and 1911. This document was placed in one of two earthenware pots (items 1993_08_14 & 15) and built into the buildings. The pots were recovered when the buildings were demolished in 1971 (Druid’s Wing).

Document reads:

"The Women’s Hospital / In the year 1856 the Women’s Hospital / was founded and carried on in a small / house in Albert Street East Melbourne.

In the year 1858 the site on which this / building stands was granted by the / Government and the first building / called the Lying in Hospital was / erected facing Madeline Street.

Afterwards the Midwifery Depart- /ment was erected facing Cardigan / Street, the funds for it being gener- / ously assisted by Miss Genevieve Ward.

The hospital needing enlargement / in 1906 a reconstruction was entered / upon and this building is part of the / scheme, the funds being raised / by public subscription of over / £6000 and a donation from / the Government of £5000.

The movement for the public / subscription having received the / invaluable support of the Lady / Mayoress of Melbourne / Mrs Henry Weedon she was / invited by the Committee to lay / the Foundation Stone on the 26th. February 1908."
