Foundation stone document: The Womens Hospital

Description
Parchment manuscript with the text written in black ink describing the origins of the Women’s Hospital, in particular referring respectively to the new building for which foundation stones were laid in 1908 and 1911. This document was placed in one of two earthenware pots (items 1993_08_14 & 15) and built into the buildings. The pots were recovered when the buildings were demolished in 1971 (Druid’s Wing). The document has the following text:

"The Womens Hospital Melbourne

In the year 1856 the Women’s Hospital / was founded and carried on in a small house / in Albert Street East Melbourne. In the / year 1858 the site on which this building /stands was granted by the Government / and the first building called the Lying / in-Hospital was erected facing Madeline / Street. Afterwards the Midwifery Depart / ment was erected facing Cardigan Street / the funds for it being generously assisted / by Miss Genevieve Ward.

The hospital needing enlargement / in 1906 a reconstruction was entered / upon and the first part the Nurses / Home and Outpatients Department / was commenced February 1908. This / new infirmary Wing and Septic Ward / is the second part of the reconstruction, / the funds being raised by Druids Gala / and Bazaar in conjunction therewith in / 1910 assisted by donations and a grant / from the Government. The Movement / received invaluable support from the Lady / Mayoress of Melbourne Mrs James / Burston and the Mayoresses of surround / ing municipalities. Mrs James Burston / was invited by the Committee to lay the / foundation stone on the 1st March / 1911."
