Baby coffin

Description
Small white baby coffin made of veneered composite board (base), and what appears to be MDF board for the lid. The coffin is rectangular in shape, has a separate lid and base and is painted in white enamel paint. There are four long metal screws with a semi-circle shaped knob to secure the lid and four metal plates on the lid where the screws are inserted. The coffin is one of three found in the Rita Harris Wing (corner of Grattan and Cardigan Streets) in a small furnace room in the basement (or in the locked ground floor room through which access was gained to the furnace room). Constructed from brick, the small basement space contained an old fashioned furnace, which would have used solid fuel. The ground floor room also contained a very old mortuary trolley. It is possible the furnace could have been a remnant from the Genevieve Ward Wing which was previously on this site. The period these coffins were used is unknown.
