Dental amalgam is used in fillings for dental cavities caused by tooth decay. Typically, liquid mercury was mixed with a metal alloy to produce amalgam for filling cavities (the metal alloy is often comprised of the metals silver, tin, copper and other trace metals). Other filling materials can entail gold or porcelain.
