Description
Tinted blue glass bottle, now without stopper, that once housed 'Chamberlain's Cholic Cholera and Diarrohea Remedy'. A cure-all for ailments afflicting both adults and children, these remedies were commonly used by people who couldn't necessarily afford to visit a doctor in the late 19th century. Designed to relieve cramping, colic, cholare, diarrohea and dyssentry, it was thought by many to give 'quick relief'. However it did generate controversy as a quack medicine, with a mother giving her 16-day old baby 3 drops in December, causing the baby to die. Whilst the label stated that the correct dosage for infants was between 1 and 15 drops, the product famously contained opium. In Canada, labels placed on medicines were introduced on March 30, 1909, as a result of the Proprietary or Patent Medicine Act.
