Bedpan

Date
Circa 1910
Description
Enclosed stainless steel bedpan used for patient waste. This particular bedpan is comprised of metal, and is completely enclosed, meaning it was most likely used in a travelling or wartime context.

With indoor plumbing only coming to most homes in the early twentieth century, bedpans and chamber pots were receptacles typically for nocturnal use in the bedroom. The key difference between a chamber pot and a bedpan however, was that bedpans were and continue to be used for bedridden patients in a hospital or home faciltity. Whilst initially beginning as ceramic bedpans, bedpans were later produced in stainless steel and other metals, as these were found to be more durable.
