Frances Blanche Gray was born in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England in March 1884, prior to moving to Victoria, Australia where she spent her childhood.On 21 December, 1904 she was awarded a Licentiate of Dental Surgery (L.D.S.) and was formally registered to practice dentistry on the March 25, 1905. Frances became the first female graduate of the University of Melbourne’s Bachelor of Dental Surgery (B.D.S.) in 1907. Whilst studying she met fellow student, Martha Burns, who went on to have an illustrious dental career.
Frances practiced dentistry for five years, primarily from 110 Collins Street. She left dentistry following her marriage to Guy Innes, future editor-in-chief of the Herald (1918-1921) on December 11, 1913. The couple relocated to London in 1922 for Guy’s work.
