Photograph of Dr Thomas Hillas, House surgeon Ballarat Hospital until October 1859.
Thomas Hillas came to Australia as a child in 1840, and then returned as a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1852. He travelled out to Australia on the first ship to bring Mrs. Chisholm's free migrants. His practice began in Collingwood before moving to Ballarat. Here Dr Hillas performed the first caesarian operation in Australia. In 1876 he moved to Wagga and died in 1892, aged 64.
