Photographic Album University of Melbourne Mildura Campus 1948-1949

Date
1948
Description
Photo album documenting John K. Julian BDSc (Melb), LD (Vic) and Peggy Hill's time at the Mildura Branch of the University of Melbourne in 1948-49.

Margaret (‘Peg’) Hill, worked for four and a half years at the University, initially in the Student Records Office from 1946 – mid 1948. She was then transferred to the University’s Mildura Branch, where she worked as secretary to the Sub-Registrar, William Tickner, until the end of 1949. There she met, John Julian, a dental student.

The photo album, A4 in size, is well preserved, and records every aspect of campus and student life at Mildura – with an emphasis on the dental students (including a 1949 photo of the dental faculty, which includes a very young Professor John Harcourt. The photos are meticulously labelled, with most individuals identified. The album also includes some Mildura Branch ephemera (student production tickets, programs, invitations, photos of the Dental Follies, etc).

The photos record a brief sunny, post-war interlude where dental (and engineering) students – many of whom were ex-servicemen were able to reclaim some of their youthful innocence and fun, lost during the war years.

Also included are two letters of reference for Miss Margaret P. Hill, a photograph of University of Melbourne staff circa 1950 at the Parkville campus, and 3 pages of handwritten notes from John Julian.
