Sir Hugh Raymond Guy Potate (1884-1961) was a surgeon, commissioned in the Australian Army Medical Corps in 1909, in August 1914 he enlisted as a captain in the Australian Imperial Force, and helped to recruit the 1st Field Ambulance. H.R.G Poate joined the St John Ambulance Brigade in 1913 and was State commissioner in 1929-42. Under his direction, St John rose to national prominence as a voluntary agency specializing in health care and training.

During World War 2, just as they had in the first War, many members enlisted in Australian Army Medical Corps Field Ambulances whilst St John and Australian Red Cross jointly administered the Voluntary Aid Detachments at home.
