Description
Subfossil tarsometatarsus and tibia from a little penguin (Eudyptula minor). The tarsometatarsus is an ankle bone unique to birds and some dinosaurs. It is derived from a fusion of the tarsus and metatarsal bones. It is not known if these two bones are from the same individual. The bones have been coated in wax; a museum technique of the early to mid-20th century used to stabilise fragile bones. These specimens were collected by the McCoy Society on their expedition to Bass Strait's King Island from December 6th 1937 to January 26th 1938.
