George Fownes, F.R.S. (14 May 1815 in London – 31 January 1849) was a British chemist.
From 1842 he was a chemistry professor at the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, and from 1846 at University College, London. He was also secretary of the Chemical Society of London. His Manual of Elementary Chemistry was a very popular textbook for half a century. This book provides a compact introduction to the Elementary Chemistry. It covers non-metallic elements, their compounds, and organic chemistry. It outlines general principles, the history of important discoveries, and practical laboratory processes y exhibiting, by the aid of numerous wood-engravings. The book aims to prepare students for advanced works and original research which in conjunction with practical instruction in the laboratory, and for exploring the spirit of research and the resources of Chemical Science.
