Hair sample box

Date
20th Century
Description
Five samples of synthetic hair mounted on a cardboard backing and set within a custom-made wooden display box with an inset glass panel, and hinged lid. The hair colours range from blonde to dark brown and the samples are numbered 1 through 5 with printed numbers. Curator's note: This object would have been used to consistenly and accurately identify hair colour in physical anthropological studies, possibly in a context of eugenics (see for example, https://www.ucl.ac.uk/culture/ucl-science-collections/eugen-fischers-hair-colour-gauge).
