Black and white oval portrait photograph of young G. C. McKay Mathison wearing a suit coat, waistcoat and dark knitted tie. The rectangular mount is cream coloured and embossed.

Gordon Clunes McKay Mathison was appointed the first director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne. He died on 18 May 1915 from wounds received from a stray bullet during the Battle of Gallipoli before he could take up the position.

This photograph was formerly in the Department of Physiology, 1968. Photograph taken at the same time as registration number 319.
