Description
Donald Pruen Cordner (1922-2009), graduated in medicine from the University of Melbourne in 1945.The son of a doctor, Edward, who played for Melbourne and University between 1905 and 1912, he was an MCC member from 1936. He was a footballer of note and a great citizen (Victorian of the Year in 1993). Don also was the oldest surviving Brownlow Medal winner (1946) until his death at 87. He was a highly respected doctor in Diamond Creek.
It was first semi-final day 1950, and a patient in Diamond Creek was due to give birth. After the baby finally arrived at 1 o'clock, that's 1pm, Dr Don got to the MCG for the game trembling, having had nothing to eat. Walking off the ground after Melbourne's loss, he said to himself "I shouldn't ever do that again," and he didn't, announcing his retirement at 28.
