Description
Brass medicine box used by Cingalese doctor, believed to be c.1600s, although this date has not been substantiated. "Time" lock on lid of box with European numbers is broken. Medicine box originally had several compartments as indicated by markings on internal walls.

This item was originally donated to Sir James Barrett (1862-1945) by Dr. Casey Wood; Sir James Barrett then donated the box to the British Medical Association in July 1938.

This item was originally donated to the Medical Society of Victoria (which later became part of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Medical Association). The A.M.A. loaned its collection of historical documents and artifacts to the Medical History Museum in 1994, and donated it in 2011.
