Description
Photograph of William Smith (1839-1929), who came to Melbourne from London in 1869. He registered at the Medical Board in London and found employment as a demonstrator of anatomy at the University of Melbourne and curator of the Pathology Museum, Melbourne Hospital, 1870. In 1870, Dr Smith established a Children's Clinic in central Melbourne. In the same year he partnered with John Singleton to relocate the clinic to 39 Stephen St (now Exhibition St) and establish the first Children's Hospital In Victoria. Dr Smith was Attending Surgeon and Honorary Secretary until he resigned in 1871 and moved to a general practice in Casterton.
