‘Dr. Chas. J. Trood was the first surgeon appointed and that was in 1879, on
his arrival in Mooroopna. Dr. Dow son, the' first medical man to reside
in the town, attended to the hospital patients before Dr. Trood’s appoint
ment. Dr. Dowson died in 1880. Dr Trood resigned in 1892, when he left
Mooroopna for a larger field of practice in Melbourne. Some idea of the
advance made Since then in open air treatment of patients can be obtained
from Dr. Trood’s annual report to the hospital subscribers of 1885, wherein
it was stated: “A temporary canvass and iron ward was Improvised dur
ing the building of the new ward, and I. am happy to say that no baneful
results occurred to any of the patients, as only those strong enough
occupied it.” He was succeeded by Dr J. W. Florance, who was appointed
house surgeon in October 1892… gave continuous service until 1927.’
