Detail after a painting from 1786 by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723– 1792) in the Royal College of Surgeon's collection.

John Hunter FRS was a Scottish surgeon, one of the most distinguished scientists and surgeons of his day. He was an early advocate of careful observation and scientific method in medicine. John Hunter was the younger brother of William Hunter, an anatomist, who taught at a school in London and was assisted by his brother during dissections.
