Dr Isaac Wallace (1823-1868) was the younger brother of John Wallace of 'Ballark', a pioneer settler of the Ballan District in 1838. Born in Nairn on 29.12.1823, he came to Victoria in 1864 and settled in Ballarat where he set up a practice. He died in 1868. Extract from the Ballarat Star follows: The Ballarat Star (Saturday 27 June 1868, p.23) announces the death of Dr Isaac Wallace, on Sunday afternoon, of disease of the heart. The deceased gentle*' man was a native of Nairn, in the north of 'Scotland, and studied at the Universities of Aberdeen and Glasgow, where he obtained his diplomas as surgeon and physician. He, came to Victoria in 1864, and settled at Ballarat the same year.
Isaac Wallace was the uncle of Clara Wallace (1857-1902), one of John Wallace’s 11 children. She married William Edward Johnston a barrister from Scotland who became a county court judge. They built their home in Heyington Place Toorak opposite Heyington Railway station and named it ‘Ballark’ (demolished) after her birthplace. Their second son was Sir William Wallace Stewart Johnston (1887-1962), distinguished physician and army medical officer.
