Cast lower splint with vulcanite attachment

Maker

Date
Circa 1917
Description
Mounted on a plaster lower model which bears the patient's name - Dugdale. The appliance was used to treat the loss of chin bone and soft tissue of the lip. The vulcanite attachment, held to a bar on the splint by two round screws, was used to support the lower lip and surrounding soft tissue while deepening or maintaining a sulcus between the two lower premolars (a sulcus is the groove between the cheek and the gum - compound material would gradually be added to push the lip outwards, gradually creating a sulcus). The metal splint shows evidence of some remnant adhering cement, used to cement the appliance to the teeth. The plaster base represents an impression taken of the patient's mouth when this stage of treatment was complete. The next stage of treatment would have involved the building of a denture.
