Cast metal upper and lower splints

Maker
Kenneth Russell (b.1885, d.1945)
Date
Circa 1917
Description
These are upper and lower splints made of cast metal mounted on a black painted plaster base. A locking tube and pin mechanism was used to hold the upper and lower splints firmly together whilst in the patient's mouth, to prevent movement of the jaws while bone fractures were healing. The object also features a mechanism for the attachment of a 'stent' extension ('stent' being the commercial name for an impression compound). This attachment, now missing, was probably used to support the upper and lower lip in the case of damage to the soft tissue of the mouth. The instrument was probably kept because it was a complicated and successfully-used appliance, and was then used for teaching purposes.
