Dental instruments and stand

Maker
Henry Forman Atkinson (b.1912, d.2016)
Date
Circa 1850
Description
Fourteen dental instruments and handle. The handle is made of steel with riveted side pieces of Xylonite. Instruments are pushed into the handle, locked and prevented from turning by a reduction of the end to a half diameter. Handle and instruments are on a circular stand, possibly made of ebony. The single instruments were found over a period of time and fitted to handle. Most of the instruments of this type are 'cone socket' and screw into the handle. This may have been a cheaper option for the travelling dentist. Base is a replica made in 1990 by Professor Henry Atkinson.
