Description
Black and white studio portrait of H.B. Allen with his wife, leaning on stone fence. Inscribed as above on front of mount (letterpress)

On the voyage back to Australia Allen had met Ada Rosalie Elizabeth Mason (1862-1933), some eight years his junior, who was travelling with the countess of Jersey as governess to her daughters. On 11 November 1891, with vice-regal blessing, they were married at Sutton Forest, Moss Vale, New South Wales. They had three daughters: Edith Margaret (1893-1962), a journalist, who worked on the Argus and Australasian but was best known for her cooking notes in the Herald under the pseudonym 'Sarah Dunne'; Mary Cecil (1893-1962); and Beatrice (Biddy) (1898-1972), a musician.
